What is Vestibular Physiotherapy, and How Does It Work?
Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialized form of physical therapy that focuses on treating conditions related to the inner ear and balance system. The vestibular system plays a crucial role in how your body senses motion and maintains equilibrium. When it’s not working properly, the result can be dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, vertigo, or balance issues that seem to come out of nowhere.
At Ottawa Physical Rehab Clinic, our vestibular physiotherapy program begins with a comprehensive one-hour assessment. During this session, we use evidence-based tests to examine how your eyes, brain, and inner ears work together to maintain balance. We identify the root cause of your symptoms—whether it's BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo), vestibular neuritis, post-concussion syndrome, or other conditions—and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) uses a combination of:
- Gaze stabilization exercises
- Balance retraining
- Positional maneuvers
- Habituation exercises
- Functional movement training
This holistic approach helps your body adapt and recalibrate, reducing dizziness and restoring normal function.
Our Approach to Vestibular Rehabilitation
At Ottawa Physical Rehab Clinic, we don’t just treat symptoms—we treat people. Every vestibular physiotherapy journey starts with listening to your story. We want to know what you're feeling, when it happens, and how it affects your life. From there, we conduct an in-depth vestibular assessment to map out your unique challenges and goals.
Once we understand the source of your symptoms, our team crafts a custom rehab plan that evolves with your progress. You’ll receive one-on-one care from trained professionals who specialize in vestibular therapy. We’ll guide you through each movement, monitor your progress, and modify your program as needed to ensure maximum results.
We believe recovery is a partnership—your input matters. Our clinic is a space where questions are welcomed, fears are addressed, and healing happens at your pace.

Vestibular Rehabilitation Ottawa FAQs
The timeline for improvement varies depending on the cause and severity of your symptoms. Some people experience relief within a few sessions, especially with conditions like BPPV, while others with more complex issues may need several weeks of consistent treatment.
Your vestibular system often responds well to repetition and retraining, so commitment to your exercise program is key. Your therapist will continuously assess your progress and adjust your plan to ensure optimal results. Most clients report noticeable improvements in balance, stability, and dizziness within the first few weeks of therapy when following their individualized program.
Yes, vestibular rehabilitation is often a crucial part of recovery after a concussion. Many individuals experience persistent dizziness, light-headedness, or visual disturbances following a head injury. These symptoms are often linked to disruptions in the vestibular system, even if brain scans appear normal.
Vestibular physiotherapy can retrain the brain’s ability to process balance and spatial information, speeding up recovery and reducing the risk of chronic post-concussion symptoms. Treatment may include visual tracking exercises, balance retraining, and graded exposure to movement to help the brain recalibrate and reduce sensitivity to motion.
In most cases, you do not need a referral from a doctor to begin vestibular physiotherapy at our clinic. We welcome self-referrals and are happy to assess your symptoms directly. However, some extended health insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement purposes, so it’s a good idea to check your policy in advance.
If needed, we can also work closely with your physician or specialist to ensure coordinated care. Whether you come to us directly or through a referral, we’re here to help you get the answers and treatment you need.
